thank you. i am flattered. i felt the same way at first. this is not usually my favorite kind of work. but i found that i could work very quickly and capture a more raw form of emotion this way. i can think a shoot to death, this is definitely a step away from my self imposed strictures and comfort zone. but i feel like it was successful. all of the things that you mentioned as eye catching were the very reasons i halted my work at this point. it was done here, finished. i am glad that it inspired a response in you.

One other comment I forgot to mention: If you are considering something different for your next creation--don't sit on the scanner; you will crack the glass.:) :)

I do not usually like manipulated images (probably because most of mine fail miserably) but I do find this one fascinating.... this is a powerful image and has multiple "zones" that catch the eye; almost as if they are seperate images. The cheek, with it's set-aside tone and assyemtry, the gaping mouth (scream, shout?) and the upper portion of the photo with a different tone moving away from the eye with some hair detail. Not quite abstract, not quite realistic.
The very fact that I had this reaction tells me you succeeded in creating a worthwhile portrait. Thanks for sharing your creation.

Compelling to view, but I'm at a loss to identify what I'm seeing. I want to look at it. It's enjoyable. But there is no parsing it. Clues?

I have been talking with another photographer here who does scanner shots (Patri Feher). Very different stylistically (from yours) but still unusual and well put together.

I also know of a couple of photographers who are doing interesting things with plastic bags. I don't have that info here at home. I'll try to remember to post that link for you tomorrow so you can see what they are doing.

This really is a great shot. I guess it's not actually a double then? Great work.

Jen, is this the one you were demonstrating with the glass? The texture is amazing... like mercury or liquid metal! You should put this in the glass project!

all done with the scanner. it is an interesting concept to use the scanner as a camera just like any other. i have seen some work done that way, but never tried it. i am quite happy with these. they allowed me to work faster and more emotionally than i was able to with a camera or film. the distortions are anomalies unto themselves, and can be amazing if embraced. glad you like it!

i utilized my scanner as a camera for my new series. the hand is against the scanner, but the other element is plastic for the texture. thank you...i hope the digital elements don't turn you off...it happens every now and then, sometimes even to me. but this whole set was very expressive to me.

Clearly the hand was photographed pressed against glass, but what is the other main element? Could be crinkled paper from its look. The final product is pretty cool.

Well, on one level it is only a simple line drawing. And yet it contains a terrific sense of motion, not just a hug but hugging and rocking. Plus it conveys a good sense of affection (which is another kind of motion, emotion).
