No, Raymond, barrel-distortion is the propensity among (especially) wide-angle lenses to draw ex-centric, straight lines as curves, curving outwards. If you photograph a rectangle it will resemble a barrel, hence the name.
Some lenses will have what is called pincushion distortion, and here the lines will be curving inwards, giving the rectangle a cushion-look.
The phenomenon you are describing (increasing fuzzyness towards the edges) is due to the rays of light not focussing in the same plane. This increases with widening apertures and will probably go away if you stop down to f8 or f11. The closer to the optical axes the rays of light pass through the lens the less aberration, both chromatic and focus-wise.

The colour-version is definitely the best. Having just two elements in a photo, and a composition that is quite simple and static, you'll need a third element to keep the viewers interest for long. Colour is this third element here, and together this image evokes a feeling of air, freedom and, despite the calendar, well, summer....

I'd like to see Chester's eyes, but other than that you've really succeeded in purveying the cuteness of these dogs.

Lovely photo that reveals relaxed intimacy and bonding in a relationship. Hard to stage shots like these, I know, I've tried. I like the eyes' going separate ways and out of the photo, because it accentuates that it's not the dialogue with the camera that is the central motif here.
I would like to see some more black space above their heads, and possibly more extension at the bottom, but otherwise, this is an excellent photo.
