Hi Dennis,
No one has yet commented on this, so here's my twopence worth...
I like the "connection" between the two subjects, the way they are looking at each other. I think this shot has great potential. There are a lot of details that give clues to the story behind the photo. The different t-shirts, for a start.
I have a suspicion that if the boys' hands were in the shot it would make for a massive improvement --- since they are not looking at the camera. This could be either by using the camera in portrait position (perhaps stepping back a bit or using a wider angle lens) or by waiting for some gesticulation.
Also, I find my eyes quite distracted by some of the items in the periphery of the shot: tre frame of the car, the contents of the boot, the dashboard in the background (those two dials look like a pair of eyes, and they are right in the line of sight between the two boys --- if they weren't there, it would be easier to just wander from one face to the other, connecting more with the models).
Here's what I would try: wider angle lens, portrait mode, get in closer and try to connect more with the subjects.
Of course, it is all too easy to say that now: I'm not sure if you knew the models or was that intimate with them.
Best regards, Angelo.

Dennis,
You need to use Photoshop's Unsharp Mask on Photo CDs to recover some of the sharpness. If you have Photoshop, try playing around with this function.

I USED A TRIPOD AND A CABLE RELEASE FOR THE LONG EXPOSURE. BUT ONCE AGAIN THANKS, I LIKE YOUR WORK AND I WILL BE IN TOUCH.

I have done long exposures while on bridges over I-75. If this image I would try vertical instead of horizontal because you have a lot of vertical lines with the light poles and buildings in the background that you would be able to fit into the frame then. The bright light is a little distracting from the rest of the image and getting a vertical composition will hopefully rid of that light and gain more to the picture with the buildings and light poles.

Dennis, this must have been taken at the 28 end of the lens as you can see the filter on the top corners. I do like the aperture star on the sun.

Nice shot. I have always been a Redskins fan. The ran this guy out of town two years ago...and he made them pay (ran a kickoff back for a TD). A great player with a very colorful personality and a nice shot.

You've caught some nice lighting on the fathers in front of the water falls. I can't help but feel that they should be more important in the image. Cropping down close, or actually moving closer to them (to me) would feel better. I'm an amateur though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt! Cheers, Marc

I think that white building in the background should be sharp at least - especially since it is supposed to be the main subject.

This flower really pops out of the background. This is probably because it is the only thing in focus, but it also has warm colours while the background is cool. This is a good thing, I think. But the flower is drifting a bit in the background, there is too much of this background. It also is not positioned very well I think. Maybe you could experiment with cutting away parts of the photo to get a more dynamic composition ?

You have a great idea here. Forgive me for not remembering where I read it, but for moon shots, with 400 film the exposure time is somewhere around 3 to 4 seconds. If stars are in the shot, they can drift after about two seconds.
Overall, nice shot

Can't tell if it's camera shake--the traffic barriers in the foreground seem sharp and the bridge in the background top center looks OK too... but something was moving, possibly just vibration of the tarmac and wind from the passing cars...? Cool shot, would like to see it a bit cleaner.

Glad to help Dave, probably best to bracket a roll of shots to get that nice crisp moon shot,, I was just looking through paul Groffs folio, and he has some nice ones, he might give us a hinst as to what shutter speeds he used, but Im sure it was around 125th at F8 or F11 with 100 iso I have a roll of them in my negative files, that I could use for sandwiching negs together

Actually, Marty, I am grateful that you did jump in, since I didn't have any idea how long a moon exposure should be. I knew I had been overexposing a lot, but I didn't think by a log factor. Your further comments are timely as well. The simplest solution would be two exposures, later spliced together electronically. On re-reading my comment, what I said was that I didn't think celestial motion was rapid enough to show a noticeable movement of the moon in ten seconds. Evidently it is. We are really moving!

Dear DC Hi, so glad you dropped me a note, and those comments were not so much for yuo, but for someone eles that commented, and said something about a 10 second exposure not seeming like enough, so thought Id jump in and explain moon exposure, as I had done some long ago, the trouble your going to run into is with that quick exposure, you will indeed get a sharp detailed moon, but your not going to get those awsome looking clouds, thats one thing your long exposure is picking up...a quandry indeed, so how to get this same photo with a sharp moon?? Im not sure you can, would have to be double exposed,, or the sharp moon photoshopped in, but I do love what you have done, many nights Iv seen that same scene, and wondered how to pull it off,

Hi Dennis *smile*...not living in the US I probably wont get the opportunity to see your first issue but at least I get to see your photographs in here. I would just make a little crop on the left side of this one...just enough to take off those black bits at the middle and top of the left border. You said you wanted to the picture taken this way...did you also want the buildings leaning like they are. If not...someone a long time ago told me if you make sure the verticle line closest to the centre of your photograph is straight it will make the buildings not have this leaning appearance so much....keep posting...*smile* Maggie

I dont have the book here with me, but a good moon shot, if I remember right is around 125th at F8 to show a detailed moon, the reason this is oblong, is cause the exposure is to long, and the moon moved through the frame, also no detail in the moon for the same reason, moon is brighter than one would think, the meter is fooled by all the black sky taking up the metering of the frame..

The moon in all three of these shots is somehow oblong. I have seen that in some of my shots as well, especially if I use an extender to try and get more magnification... Ten seconds seems too short for this to be due to celestial motion. Is there astygmatism of the lens elements?
