Hi Garold,
It is a caterpillar, but not that of a black swallowtail butterfly.

The caterpillar is that of the Citheronia regalis
moth. The caterpillar is commonly called the Hickory Horned Devil.

This is definitely some type of Swallowtail Butterfly Larva. Probably in its Third or fourth-instar larval stage. I think its a Black Swallowtail but not 100% sure. Usually have to look at the adult stage or the entire life cycle of the insect. I hope this helps. Great photograph Devin and by the way howdy. LOL. Good luck to you.

Devin,
It's deinfitely a caterpillar, though I'm not sure which one. He sort of looks like an emperor: http://www.javajane.co.uk/Hairy/slides/emporer.html
But... Whatever he is, we don't have them in Northern Idaho. There's a guy named Bill Oehlke with a website where you can contact him with info about where you found it, and maybe send him the link to the image and he will try to ID it for you. http://www3.islandtelecom.com/~oehlkew/catanim.htm

On a side note, I love the photo, but think it would have been better without your hand in the shot. =)

m Okay... you wanted comment. I like this photo. The only thing missing out of you gallery are some pretty women ( not necessarily nude) but women with facial and body character. On the other hand I see you as a photojournalist for up close shots of the down trodden and the forgotten.

I like the mood, tones, and textures a lot... I think the composition is ok but I might have taken a tighter shot in on the door and the window on the left. I agree with what Lea said a little space under the door. Good job can't wait to see more.

I think the blur at the back of the image is OK, however, only the very front inch or so of the saucer is in focus. I'm curious as to (1) where the area of focus was, (2) what was the aperature. I would have extended the DOF to include from the front of the green saucer to the back edge of the yellow lip.

The direction of the lighting seems good, but the blown out window frame is distracting, as well as the bright piece of silverware in the left hand side. I also find the chopped-off hands of the person to be somewhat distracting as well.

Always think...what are you really trying to show? What object should be the most important visually? And what order to you want the objects to be viewed in? If you really want the coffe cup in the front to be the most important, then I would eliminate all other objects but the table, saucer, cup and wall behind.

If the focus is the feeling in the entire room, then maybe you would want to zoom out a little bit, and extend the DOF throughout the frame (f/22 or higher).

I think the overall colors and warm feeling was acheived nicely, and to me the most important thing to try and change would be the focus and DOF on the front cup. I always will shoot a variety of shots of each composition w/ varying aperature settings, so afterward, I can have my choice.

Hope this helps,
Chris
