Hey James - this photograph was taken during the May holiday in China, so yes the crowds were a little much! But even at this time, once you were inside the Stone Forest it was big enough that you didn't see too many other people. It's a fairly interesting spot, I have a few more pictures which I will definitely put up once I get back to Canada!

amanda, just wondering if you have any photos from inside the stone forest? i know the place has some allure, but this crowd of people makes me not want to go there. unfortunately one of the major deawbacks of tourist sites in china.

I think I do like that better, Sally. The less negative space creates a somewhat busier, livelier scene. Thanks for all the comments!! I don't know how to crop pictures on my computer - everything is in Chinese!

This could be neat if it were sharper. Was higher ISO an option? The D70 can easily take good pictures up to iso 800. After that it gets pretty noisy. Again, the white balance seems to be wrong.

The composition is interesting and gives me a good sense of depth. If it were sharper I'd be very satisfied.

This one requires me to read the description to even know what's going on. Instead, you could do a closeup of the firecrackers in the puddles, which would a much clearer idea of what you were looking at. There's an interesting irony in firecrackers soggy and wet, so that could work well up close.

Your composition on this is pretty nice. You might consider a smaller aperture (f8 to f16 or so) to make the bright lights sharper. Lights, at night, tend to develop a halo, but you can control that based on your aperture. It would give it a slightly crisper appearance.

Overall the colors are nice and the composition is simple. That's good.

My first impression is simply that the image is too dark. I can't tell what's going on because of it. Since this is the Nikon D70 (which I also use!), you can adjust the ISO sensitivity up if you have to shoot handheld at night. If you were tripod mounted, that would help too. The other thing I notice is that it's overly orange. That implies you didn't have it set to incandescent white balance. If you shoot RAW mode, you can adjust this afterward; but if you shoot JPGs then you have to get it right before taking the picture.

The content could be interesting if I could see it better.

Hi Amanda - I love night photos (probably because I struggle to do them myself!). You've got lots of interesting things going on in this picture - but there are also some areas with not a lot going on. Have you thought about cropping out some of the dark bits and lightening the sidewalk so that the peoples silhouettes stand out more?
What do you think? I guess it's down to personal taste!
Best wishes, Sally

I love the constrast between the silhouettes and the coloourful signs. The lighting seems fine but I think a little longer shutter speed would bring out the silhouettes a litle more. Right now they blend in with the sidewalk.

Thanks Robert! My digital is a Nikon D70, and in many respects heavier weight than my film SLR but it is more convenient not having to lug around so much film everywhere I go haha. I felt really silly not having backed up my work :S but the USB storage device only held about 40 photographs!

Any other comments would be appreciated

Welcome Amanda. This is a common scene in China and this is an excellant shot to capture the feeling of the night markets. Digital cameras have there limitations but the flexibility and convenience almost makes them necessary for any person who loves photography today. I take mine everywhere today, where I would only take my film camera when I knew I was going to take shots. Just make sure you back up all your files next time!
