About
A telephone insulator, model Hemingray No. 40, recently removed from service on the poles that serve my neighborhood and now resting on a deck railing as a design element, did not seem like a suitable subject until it got briefly covered with a wet plastic tarp on a warm sunny day and was transformed. The date on one of the removed insulators was 1895. I think that was the batch date for the mold and not the production date, but just a bit of info to share.
Hi Warren - The plastic sheet was hung to dry and was both in front and behind the insulator creating double reflective surfaces. The insulator is on a railing (2x4) directly underneath another railing that supports the plastic so that the front and back sides of the plastic are 6-9 inches apart.
Hi Ken, The plastic tarp, you hung it in front of the insulator? Great idea that creates a magnificent photo. The scratches in the tarp add to the old time feel of the subject, and the side lighting is excellent.
Thanks Tim and Agust. I tried this off-center also, but preferred the aesthetics of the centered subject even thou it violates the standards. I've done this before with symmetrical subjects and have found that I (usually) like the centered version over the off-center version. See attached. - Mister Ken
Good eye and capture, Ken. So much that is mundane may be miraculously transformed by changes in light. Distortion. Filtration. Humidification! Well seen, and I really like the final image, the texture, color and form of the insulator and its plastic wrap. The Old Man and The Insulator? I think I read that in high school... Tim
