Hi Sheila, We were in Seatle in Sept - Oct 2005; have a few relatives living there, and it was about time we caught up with them again. Seattle was great, and I loved the surrounding NP's - been to the Olympic Peninsula, North Cascades and, of course, the Mountain.
We had some luck with the weather, that's for sure!

A photo of my home town! When did you visit and what did you think? You must have been up on Queen Anne for this shot. Queen Anne is one of my favorite neighborhoods.
A very beautiful shot of Seattle's Space Needle. You captured Mt. Rainier perfectly in the background. Looks like to picked a good day for this photo. Well done.

Hi Joggie, Good thoughts, which I can only agree with. I'm a lover of nature too, maybe with a different approach or vision, but I do like to see or create a balance between human presence and absense. We're part of nature too in a way, and as long as we can create a benificial coexistence, there's beauty in both. I'm by no means a nature photographer, as my next series wil illustrate. Nature photography is not my forte, but given the choice, me too would chose the mountain over th needle.

Great image Hugo - I like the juxta-position of the city next to the mountain. Contrasting, yet complimentary. I am a lover of nature, pure and undefiled. This image however, reminds one that man is as part of this earth than the rest of nature. The secret lies in balance. Up to now, nature was big and strong enough to absorb what man threw at it - for how long though? Great series - I prefer this one, particularly the time of day providing wonderful light to soften the impact of man. Regards.

Superb perspective of the city skyline, quite different from a view including the Sound. With the majestic Mount Rainier watching over the city from the distance and the elegant Needdle right in the middle of it, there is no way for anyone to overlook such a breathtaking beauty.

Outstanding image, Hugo. The balance of manmade and nature. I like the foliage in the foreground as it helps to establish layers (nature, city, nature) I think my favorite part of this image is the construction crane near the middle - it shows a growing city.

Ahh Hugo... Seattle - my most favourite of the US west coast cities. I visited the US a few years ago and spent a month travelling around the west/northwest. Seattle was the only city that felt like 'home'. The mountain was 'up' when I was there too - this is apparently quite rare - disappointingly though - I had little in the way of decent photographic equipment at the time (an APS p&s and a camborder with vga stills). This is the 'classic' viewpoint of the city - made all that much better by the angle of the sun (afternoon/evening I assume looking at the angle).
I was so suprised when I visited - I had seen many shots of this famous lanmark - and always assumed that it was in fact 'somewhere near' the buildings by it in the pic - as you well know - it's a good distance away in truth!
Love the city, and love the photo Hugo. Only comment I have is that it seems (and it may be exaggerated by elements of the scene) to be rotated slightly - verts seem slightly off clockwise.

This is wonderful in full pano-mode. The city looks somewhat unreal, a little too perfect, the buildings "placed" in the image against an idealistic backdrop of the mountain. Reminds me of Sim-City!

Having noticed some softness in this image when I first saw it, I "passed" commenting. But now I've seen the second one in the series I've returned. There is definitely something a little softer than usual here, Hugo. There was also something a little strange with the focus/softness in the foreground of that wonderful Mt. Rainier shot. Do you think your camera might need adjustment? This is, of course, a wonderful image... and I'm just trying to be helpful, not critical! Sure you understand.

It’s a wonderful photo! A lot too see, but with a unique message for me: the composition is exceptional, the high-rise flats against the mountain. The harmony of the colour, the shadows and the blue sky make the photo astonishing. What makes the pictures unique is not here just the photo-technique, but the perspective you did choose for your shot! The city is standing in the front of mountain…..! Just I hope, we are not standing against!!

Hi Gayle, Thank you very much... And yes, from what my cousin told me, this is quite a popular/ well known view point when the mountain is up. And.... yes, I definitely did make it into the Hoh rainforest (Quinault, the Hoh visitors' centre, and up north to Shi Shi beach, east to the Hurricane Ridge....
And Pike PLace? Yes, I have a few of those photos too... i'm not too impressed with those photos, though...:)

hi,i have seen this very same shot many times from this very popular viewpoint,which is not to dismiss your shot in any way...it is a classic perspective...actually your shot has a graphic architectural drawing quality to me because of the light/contrast level/saturation...
To those not in the know,the mountain is actually 85+ miles south of Seattle (i now live approx. 45 miles north of the mountain and only have to drive 2 miles to see a grand view of it weather permitting..LOL..)
I hope that you made it to the Hoh rainforest in the Olympic Nat'l Park on the peninsula,and if not,then if interested,go to my portfolio and click on the Hoh rainforest category on left and i also have some Seattle cityscapes you may like in the Seattle category....get any Pike Place Market shots downtown?...something i still want to do after all of these years!

wonderful and very great capture ,by all means I did enjoy viewing this image .please my dear friend ,also such image would have been alot greater if it has been captured using a fixed focal lenght lens like the 85mm where you have no "Clerances

Hi Jude, our itinerary was basically very simple. We stayed in West seattle with a cousin of mine, and took a few trips to Mt. Rainier, The North Cascades, The Olympics (including Hurricane ridge and BC / Vancouver). We hiked quite a bit through the various NP, as well as through town. Visited a Mariners' game, and basically enjoyed our time there....:) The San Juans will have to wait till our next trip, when we have a bit more time to really get out in the wilderness and do a few decent hikes.... More NW photos will undoubtedly follow in the next few weeks... I've given myself to the end of Feb, when I go to Death Valley... heheheheheh
I know exactly why you are "screwing around" (your words, definitely not mine) with light paintings... You won't see me posting shots of tulips, wooden shoes and windmills either...:) (although.... I might shoot a few...;)

It's funny, because me and my family were just talking about our trip up to Seattle last year. I used to live across the Puget Sound from there. You really have done the city some justice here. Yes indeed it is just like a postcard showing the city and the majestic mountain in the distance. Razor sharp with wonderful details and clarity. Perfectly composed. Breathtaking image...and this coming from someone who usually doesn't care for cities too much. I tend to drive through them fairly quickly cause I don't "do crowds" very well anymore. I did pass through Seattle on the way to Alaska a few months back but didn't see it from this perspective unfortunately. Will be going back up that way again in a few months though so will take it a bit lower next time. Beautiful Hugo.
