This was taken in the Gion district of Kyoto, Japan last month. In case you're wondering, Geishas are almost revered as superstars in Japan. There are so few nowadays, that it seems whenever there was even a fleeting glimpse of one, people would flock for a closer look.
These two young girls are dressed up as Meikos (apprentice Geishas). They are not real Meikos (from what I can tell), but still their appeal to others on the street was no less.
I was rather thrilled to be able to capture this, especially with the backdrop of the wooden traditional houses, etc.
Good portrait, but I'd like to see it with the color intact.
I understand that Kyoto has places where tourist girls can rent kimonos and get made up like a maiko for the day. If the maiko you see on the street seems to love all the attention, it's safe to guess they're probably tourists.
