Hi Ina,
Great display of past treasures that meant so much in their day. The two riding horses, a milk can, tricycle and washing board. Now all the kids today have to content with are the PS2's', Ipods and the likes.
Photograph looks very nice in sepia.

Ha! ha! Very nice composition.
The tricycle is behind the vitrine but, poor horses, they cannot go away so there is no risk for them being outdoors!

Hi Ina, thanks for your reply, and elaborate explanation. I see your point as to the dated feel of the image. Very valid indeed....:) As to the composition, the B&W crop is, IMO (Again...:) A more solid solution, I believe.
I sure meant well, but I also hope my first comment was also put delicately enough to make sure of that!

Overall I like this (and it brings back wonderful memories for me too). But I noticed your b&w version was somewhat dull; attached is a Levels adjustment that might make it a bit more snappy. It does change the mood a bit though, and I'm not sure if that was what you were going for.

You know what what they say "Better to be hated than to be ignored" - Heh-heh-heh, figuratively speaking, if it sparked your interest, at least it's not boring :)

The sepia wasn't meant to match the shop. If I wanted to age the picture I wouldn't have gone so sharp, I would have added some scratches, grain, etc. There is a good reason for this choice. It may not have the intended result, but the reason is there, nevertheless.
-Color was ugly: red and orange brick, grey steps, brown horses, fluorescent orange tricycle, all together an ugly combination, so color was not good. Next, you have B & W versus sepia. Sepia simply appealed to me because it approximated better the rust in the milk can, and has a warm feel to it, such as when you think of your childhood, because it is mainly related to childhood.
B & W would have looked too cold, "documentary," in my opinion and that's why I chose sepia.
- Now the composition: it is a good absolutely valid point, it is rather static. There is a vague diagonal between the milk can and the top left window, but still the horses are central and horizontal, as you said.
I'm attaching a B & W different crop :)

If you figure it out be sure and let us know. There are many images that look so much better in large view...I wonder what the deal is.
Hugo had an interesting critique...I think if you cropped on the left to about right in the middle of the stairs it would keep the eye on the page better and solve a couple of the things he referred to.
It was nice to have a second look at it. Still love it!

Those horses I once rode when I was very young, and to see them here is amazing. Even that tricycle I can recall. The technical clarity from the camera you used makes them all look new again, which the sepia cannot make old. Somehow in time, nothing gets old :)

To be completely honest, this photo doesn't work for me.... Why do I comment? Because it makes me think why it doesn't work for me (and that, in a way, is reason enough to like it....:))
I have a bit of trouble assessing the reason behind the choice for this sepia tone. Is it to match the literary antique feel of the shop? In that case, I'd say the toning is a bit too light, tweaking down the brightness would provide a stronger dated feel, I believe. Secondly, the colour matching the essence of a dusty antique shop seems a bit forced for me. I realise this is purely a subjective opinion, but what's wrong with "good old fashioned" black and white? I think with the right tonal range, it would either create the same effect, or even improve on it.
A second thing I experience when looking at this shot is that the composition lacks your usual creative and more playful approach. Assessing the imaginary lines, the rules have been followed nicely, but it lacks the element of surprise, if you see what I mean. It has one predominant vanishing point to the left, and the stairs are unable to compensate that, I think. The rocking horses, flanked by the staircase on the left and the milk-thing on the right make the composition a bit centered horizontally. Also, it distracts a bit from the objects in the window. Again, a purely subjective observation.
On to the positive points, as there are quite a few of them (I'm only comparing this to what I've grown to know as "your standard" - so that leaves me with pretty standard stuff) The photo is well exposed, has in fact an interesting feel and theme, and most important, it makes me think. As I've mentioned before, that just MUST qualify any photo as good, as that's what I'm looking for in most photos I comment on (also quite subjective)
Hope you don't mind me being so tedious....

Hi Ina, I'm back for a quick visit as I passed my test (YAY) so the study is over. Now have to deal with the dentist (yikes!) so will disappear again for a short while soon. I haven't had a chance to comment on your other 2 images of the cars you posted but they are super shots.
I feel like you've taken me back to my childhood with this image. The sepia tone, sidewalk, the old wooden steps going into the antique shop, the old rocking horses and milk jug in front of the store all take me back to an old street I used to draw on with chalk on the sidewalk and play hopscotch. Goodness I even had a tricycle just like the one in the window.....hmmm......I guess that makes me antique huh?!! (oops) A lovely image and thanks for yet another trip down memory lane.
