Thanks Kevin. This midday sun on this shallow fountain was making some great patterns. All I had to do was shoot! As to the "no swimming" warning, funnily absurd! Thanks again!

Hi Joel, thanks very much for your kind words and interesting observations on "no swimming". I had not thought of printing it large but reading your words I understand what you are seeing and agree that a large print, even on the order of several feet would work very well conceptually. The field of view shot in the actual photo is at least 15 feet (5 meters) wide as I recall. Big would work, good observation.

It's a digital shot and I actually had tried changing the color to blue or green, as you inquire. The chromic conversion looked pretty natrural as the shot is relatively monochromic to begin with, but the color converted shot looked kind of ordinary so I opted to keep the original color.

What makes the electric lines so bright is that the water is only a foot or two deep as you observe. It's a public fountain in Philadelphia, made of concrete I believe.

Thanks again for your great observations!

Absolutely love the effect you got fro the light hitting the water, and those colros really do grab your attention. As for the no swimming" sign, it just brings a little bit of comedy to it. Keep up the good work.

Mark,

This is a great photo! One of those images you just want to print as huge as possible. The gold tones are so nice, but what I think works so well, are the glowing electric peaks, those white lines that frame the caustics so well. Your composition works so well with the 'no swimming' off to the left, and the detailed caustics in the top right. What would make this a great gigantic wall print, is the fact that you can tell how shallow the water is!

Well done!

curious if you tried color timing it to blue or green?

cheers,
-Joel

Thanks for your observant comments, Ina. This was a shallow fountain I shot on my trip to Phlly in September (seems like years ago!). I guess by "no swimming" they don't want the neighborhood kids playing in the fountain. Dunno why though, as you say, the water is only about two feet deep! The fountain bottom must have been painted this color, sort of an odd choice, but unusual, as you say!

I love this abstract with water, Mark! The light pattern is beautiful, and very unusual, because of the color not being blue (as expected) - but clear with beige undertones. The most interesting aspect is the wavy text "No Swimming" which doesn't make much sense, seeing the water is shallow, but anyway, it's the addition of the text that makes this picture a great composition. It's like a stamp on an envelope - it gives personality and acts as a striking surprise. The letters themselves seem to be swimming in a nice contradiction to their own meaning! Well seen and composed! Best regards, Ina
