About If you by chance happen to travel a lonely track between Elsdon, Northumberland & Cambo, you may come upon an unnerving sight.

High on a rope, dangling from the end of a wooden frame is the head of one William Winter… all that is left to warn passers by of the punishment bestowed for murder!

An eerie sight to behold, especially late at night whilst wandering this dark moor land.

William Winter was in fact executed at the Westgate in Newcastle upon Tyne along with Jane & Eleanor Clark in 1791 for the murder of Margaret Crozier, an elderly woman who lived in the nearby town of Elsdon. Winters body was then hung from the gibbet just outside of the town, on what at the time was the main route that cattle were driven down from Scotland to the English marts. Williams body hung until it rotted to warn passers by of the fate of Thieves & Murderers.

I have heard sometimes when people photograph this gibbet a faint outline of a body can be seen hanging from the neck down… only now, of course, the head is just a replica (in fact, it’s a replica of the replica stone head which constantly went walkabouts at the hands of thieves! How fitting!)

Enjoy the Witching hour...
May your night pass without too many bumps x

Excellent Sue! I love this one, and your story too. It's strange how the macabre and the sinister can have a certain magick about them - it's almost a shame we can no longer pass a lonely gibbet on a dark and foreboding night's journey through the lonely woods.....

Hope your Halloween was a magickal one x

Great view of the gibbet, and I really like the texture you've added to this. In your 'about' you've missed out the most horrific fact of all: that some clown has decided it'd be a great idea to build a 70m high mast within spitting distance of this historic landmark :-(

Ooooh! Pretty spooky, Sue, but well done! Really sets the mood, and as we're having Hallowe'en over here the timing is perfect!
Dave.
