Hi John,
Thanks for the comments, He was back lit but I was able to make adjustments in PS. Still it's a little noisy, not very noticeable in this resized image. I should have over exposed by about a stop and I would have had a better image. Although we are in their breeding range, I have never seen a red headed woodpecker. It would be great if you could get a shot of him, be sure to post it.
I like the IS lens very much, I don't think I could have got the osprey in flight shot that's in my portfolio without it. I feel IS is critical for birding where almost all your shots are telephoto and you need precise sharp focusing. I would like to be able to upgrade to an Canon IS L telephoto lens, like the 300 2.8 to get even sharper images. If I had that lens I could use it with a 1.4 teleconverter.
Thanks for viewing.

All the best,
Joe

Hi Art,
Thanks for the comments. Do think the 400 5.6 is the best choice for birding? I was thinking 40D, 300 4.0 is or even 300 2.8 is and a 1.4 tc.
I will check out your shot shortly.

Have a great day,
Joe

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comments. No problem with head movement as he wasn't hammering at the tree when I took this shot. He had just left the suet feeder.

Have a great day,
Joe

Thanks for the detailed feedback Ina, They move to the other side of the tree when I try to photograph them too. In this case, he had just left the suet feeder and landed on this branch. I was lucky to get this shot before he moved on.

Have a great day,
Joe

Good one Joe, I'll be putting one of these up next. Colours are nice, but if you are to get into serious birding, you need a longer lens ala the 400 5.6.

Very nice woodpecker shot, Joe! Nice you were able to get it while his head was still long enough!

Great color and perfect pose on this cutie, Joe! They always seem to go on the other side of the tree when I want to take a picture! That's very good, and you got really nice detail on his face, eye, body feathers, and even the claws! Excellent capture, Ina

Nice exposure. Very classic pose. Although I think this maybe a Hairy Woodpecker based upon the size of its beak. It's hard to tell without some other reference to its size.
