Hi Andre!

And thanks a lot for the ideas. Up to now I as only approcaing this from the direction of subtracting the additional space at the top and giving it an even more... asphyxiating look and feel, that I think fits the darker atmosphere of that winter day. But your approach would make it also very interesting. It would make it friendlier to look at, and somehow enhance the beauty of the tree, I guess. It would go more in the direction of winter beauty.

So, indeed the presence or absence of some additional space is able to make the image completely different - which is a very powerful way to compose according to intentions.

Thanks again for reminding me of it! And as about rules, well, even the rule "rules are made to be broken" should be broken sometimes - oh, what cans of worms do I open sometimes! ;-)

Yes Nick.
A little more space without much detail on one or both sides of the tree would give the image a different look. Also some foreground in front of the tree would be a nice addition. Of course this is only subjective. If your intention is to have a close crop as displayed, that is fine too. I've been taught that having some balanced space around a subject helps to give the subject "breathing room". But, as we all know rules are made to be broken :)

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Dave! The winter sky seems to be somehow ideal for such captures.

Have a nice weekend,

Nick

Good capture of the tangles and lines of the branches against the winter sky, Nick!

Hi Andre, and thanks a lot for your as always elaborated comment. Indeed, this one has received also a destinction on that photo exposition about trees, that I already talked about.

But, what do you mean by "more negative space"? More space without any branches but only background?

Best wishes and many thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,
This one seems to be the most effective of this series.
It is a good example of creating a sad or melancholy mood.
I think it's the dreary looking branches on both sides of the tree that somehow set up a sad mood. The b&w format help this sad mood as well.
The only suggestion I might make is to have just a bit more negative space in the foreground and one of the sides. But I bet this was not possible because of other objects in the way.

Many many thanks, Claudia!

I have the impression that cropping off a bit of the sky would make the composition better - but I am not sure about that.

Have a nice weekend,

Nick
