Wow, striking atmosphere and the flowers in the foreground really adds to the mood..

So, the dust was on your side this time. I think that it helped to make that softer, diffused light over the whole image. Good that you didn't change that much.

Very well explained Nick. I like your adjusted image also. Actually after giving some consideration I did only some minor tweaking to this image because I wanted to keep it as original as possible. The water you see was very dirty and muddy. The grass was pretty bland. The air was full of dust. The atmosphere looks very dusty. I wanted to keep this as real as possible.
The tree is a bit of distraction. Actually I cropped a bit on the right but still could not completely get rid of the tree.

What a color palette here, Ananda! Geen yellow all over the place - even the air has that green/yellow feel. It smells after spring everywhere. At first glance I thought that it needed levels adjustment for more contrast, and indeed it won contrast (attachment) but unfortunately it lost all its strong atmosphere. So we leave it as fresh and green/yellow as it is! And so we see that sometimes the light is more important for the atmosphere even at the cost of lower contrast.
The composition is also very well balanced. The half tree at the bottom right doesn't disturb at all as it is gets almost "invisible" under the hues of the image. Another way of composition would be to exclude completely all the houses and the scene at the far back, but this would be only different - not better.
The three kids surely add much interest to the image. It would be near perfect to me even without them, but with them it is even stronger.
