I think the picture is a bit too dark. But you did catch a little bit of light in the eye. According to bird-photographers I know that's essential.

Interesting picture of the bird. I took a similar one once at a bird sanctuary in the Florida Keys. He really seems to be studying you. I like the composition and the close up. I see a real personality in the bird. You captured that well. It is just a bit soft around the eye, might be able to sharpen that up just a bit with an editing program, but a good shot!!
