Kevin, this shot does seem to speak of the flat featureless terrain that one tends to think of when one thinks of Kansas. I agree that a crop closer to the tree would serve this shot much better, there's too much sky.

I think you could get much the same effect by cropping about 1/4 off the top...there is just too much up there that pulls the viewers eye that way...good color and good clarity as well as exposure
