Thanks all for the kind comments. For the technical questions - I used a 20mm EF lens (35mm format), probably around f16-22 for DOF (gotta love lens that still have DOF scales).
It was an overcast day (maybe even a little light drizzle here and there) in the late afternoon, maybe 2 hours before sunset. I was shooting Velvia rated at 50, and bracketed 1/2 stop up and down. A lot of people rate Velvia at 40 and process at 50, but I rated at 50 that day because I wanted a little darker mood and I wanted to make sure the colors didn't wash out.
This shot was the middle bracket (I can't remember if I spot-metered off the rock and went down a stop or took an incident reading - I've screwed up enough of these type of shots to know that they can be very tricky exposure wise).
The only filter I used was a circular polarizer, although I still had a bit of reflections, probably due to the diffusion of the light resulting in a lack of strong polarization - either that or it was the angle of view relative to the sun, I don't know my polarization physics that well.
Marc Gougenheim of photo.net has made a couple of very good post-production suggestions that make this shot even better. It is a touch too blue, and I think the rock & leaves need to be a bit brighter as well.
I've attached the 3 exposures side by side. While the bright one (which would be close a "correct" Velvia overexposure) has the best foreground, I liked the darkness and moodiness of the background, and a shade more detail in the water of the middle bracket). Hope this helps!
