Thanks Ian, Wow I do see what you mean. Looks a lot better. I will ask the lab about scanning them in a higher res. They gave it to me in JPEG format - can I request TIFF? Can I then convert. Sorry for all the questions but this scanning business is new to me. Cheers for all your help, Erin

Erin, it's hard to be sure about the scan withhout seeing the original print but I'd say it looks a little flat and doesn't bring any extra attention you would yourself at the scanning stage. This is not digital manipulation only making a more faithful representation of what you saw and recorded. The image size is of quite a low resolution and you would need to ask the lab for it's higest resolution setting and then work on it yourself in your software always keeping it as a TIFF file if possible and then only convert to jpeg at the required image size for web positing when it's ready. The reason for that is that TIFF's don't compress every time you do something and save them whereas jpegs lose data every time you work on them. TIFF is a lossless method whereas JPEG is 'lossy'. I only learned this recently and boy does it make a difference. I hope this helps a little. Anyway, I made a slight crop, I did a tiny bit of selective sharpening and contrast adjustment on your posted image and whilst I think it's only an indication of how you can easily improve what the lab sends you, you might disagree and feel free to tell me to push off! Ian

Hi Ian, Thanks a million for your reply to my Purple Balloon. I will defo check out the site you mentioned. I really like your work and appreciate your comments. As far as the scanning goes - that was done by a lab as I don't have a scanner myself. I'm not that technically minded so what is wrong with the scan so I can look out for it in future? Thanks again, Erin

Erin, what a lovely little girl, a very Irish look for sure! The ballon makes for a good prop. The composition is nice too and the only thing letting this down is the scan. There's no bio for you and only this one pic so I'll be presumptious and say you show a good eye and things can only improve as you master scanning and presentation techniques. I see there are no other comments which is a pity. Don't lose heart, and there will be other times when you'll get good feedback. Can I recommend also www.webphotoforum.com too? It has much less traffic than UF and people there get to know one another quite well with a lot of support especially for new members. Let me know what you think and if you decide to try it I'll look out for you.I've made huge progress in a year and you'll do the same.
