Nice sweeping lines and a good flow to this piece. I enjoy hot the flow leads in from the left and continues outward, even with it going into the bottom of the screen I dont feel it stopping like I think i expect it to. Nice work!

A good sign is when you're unaware of these rules and you instinctively follow them. Your original bridge shot was a perfect example of the rule of thirds. The idea is you divide your image up with tic tac toe board. Where the lines intersect is where you want your area of interest to be. Google "rule of thirds" and you'll find several pages on it.
I like this other photo, but it is not as strong as your original. I do like the sharp lighting and contrast. It really does add dimension well and create a great environment for the blue/purple of the sky to pop in comparison to the shadowed area.
I hope all this helps. Too funny about Hawaii :)

Thanks Jim for taking the time to comment again! Yes I seem to remember something about that rule of thirds...lets see, that would be back in 1986. 1/3 rd of my time consumed by studying, workning and chasing girls in Hawaii. You know that a third of an hour in other places equals an hour in Hawaii. Now that I've pulled your chain........... Its been awhile since I studied photography formally. I was always better at shooting and learning through my mistakes. Still making them but not as many as years back. Still like braking rules though. I appreciate your comments and look forward to hearing more in the future. Attaching another shot of that same elevated highway from the other side of the canal that runs underneath it. Let my know what you think Sayaonara for now

Irenka, Thanks for the advice! The problem with moving to the right is that would put me in a canal that runs under the elevated highway

Fantastic architecture shot. Magnificent colours.. I think though I would move few steps to the right, to fill in the picture a bit more.. I feel little imbalance between right and left.

I think your original is a good balance considering the difficulty of isolating you subject. My comment was in regard to the "rule of thirds". This is something you should look up and study. It is a good guideline to follow, but it is not a photographic law. The idea is that keeping your viewers focus off center can make a more dramatic image. I think your original image works exceptionally well because the distracting elements are buried in the silhouette while the most interesting aspects of the bridge are still clearly visible. The dramatic color in the sky is excellent. Tough subject to shoot.

Thanks Gerhard, I blurred the background by tweaking the contrast and brightness controls that comes with my Mac iPhoto software. No software like Photoshop so I used an actual twilight filter for the colors.

Jim, Here is another shot. This location is a challenge to shot. There is a lot of clutter that takes away from the bridge. Shot it from the side the horizon isnt straight, clutter in background, etc. Underneath is creating the same problems. Will revisit again and see what I can come up with. Its a wonderful bridge if you cut out everything else. What rule? If there is a rule, I would love to break it......

Great color. I wonder how this would have looked had the camera been panned to the left a little more. The black of the underpass might have balanced the intense color on the opposite side of the image. The placement of the bridge tower doesn't have to necessarily be at the 1/3rd point. Rules are meant to be broken.
