About	why cars abandoned by the side of the road often have a piece of cloth hanging out of the window -is it some sort of code? This has bugged me for ages and I would be grateful to know what it means!

I think it is a distress signal. When more cars had antennae, it would be tied to that so it blows in the wind as a warning to other cars, I think.
