About I found this poor Inca Lily stem in a florist shop - bedraggled, damaged and just begging for my attention :-) After a couple of days' nursing some life back into it, I was finally able to capture it's beautiful and fascinating colour.

This is also the first time I used my very new and very black velvet background :-) What a pleasure! The old black artboards are now a thing of the past! I can highly recommend getting yourself a piece of black velvet - and of course lots of sticky tape to remove cat hair, if you are owned by felines :-)

Wow ... this colour combination is just GORGEOUS! A beautiful composition & framing!

Black velvet is certainly the best. I?ve used a black t-shirt about 1 m behind the flower. Maybe it?s better to cut some of my old gala dresses into pieces ;-)

Now you have to forgive me but 'WOW' back at yah, this is gorgeous, the pinks and blue contrast so nicely and are so rich and textured especially against the black velvet. Incredible job bringing it back to life and an astonishing capture. (not a cat hair in sight either :-) I walk around with a strip of duct tape around my hand)

Hi Anne
You're right - there is definitely more definition. Get yourself a piece that you only use indoors, and get a smaller piece that you can throw over unwanted background when shooting in the veld.
I'm shooting some more tomorrow - Robert had my Z1 for the day ... grrrrrr :-))

Superb shot! The black background intensifies the flower's colours. Sharp image too.
I'll try the tip with the black velvet next time :)

Hi Linn, I didn't think that black velvet could make that much difference but that is remarkable. I've got to get some. How are you doing with your tutorials?
This is a 10.

Linn --

I can really see the difference in the background now. Before, it all looked black to me, but now . . . there really is a difference. The flowers are clear and the colors are just beautiful. I love how you captured all of the details inside the flowers. Well done!

Regards,
Anne

Evening Lori :-)
Thank you and welcome back - you were in my thoughts on Wednesday :-) Hope you survived the desert? :-))

When I shoot florals at home, I always do them on our front porch. I do make use of a L-shaped backboard and can move around the porch as and when the sun is higher.

UF and the www is terribly slow (for me at least) tonight - so hopefully this comment will go through. Will catch you again over the weekend? :-)

G'Night

Hi Linn,

BEAUTIFUL floral! YEs, the black velvet cannot be beat, it absorbs the light wonderfully!

This image is absolutely gorgeous! Lighting and detail are awesome! Do you use window light? :)

Mr S - just because you won't have cat hairs on your black velvet, be careful of bird poops!

Somebody on UseFilm suggested using a smaller piece of black velvet when shooting flowers in the veld, as you can use it to drape over unwanted background. I got myself a large piece and two smaller pieces, the latter which I will take with when I eventually get back to visiting nurseries.

I was planning on shooting some more tomorrow but Robert has been very nice to me today - he wants to borrow the Z1 tommorrow!

You've done it again, Linn!
You're developing a real eye and talent for these floral images.
I like the idea of the velvet ~ must look into that!
And just think, mine will never, EVER!, get spoilt by cat hairs!!
Kind regards, Chris
