I prefer this one, Patrick, because the effect of the time exposure in smoothing the movement of water is a little too dominating in the other (portrait orientation) photo. Here, it is enough to surprise and delight without taking away from that still, watchful bird. Thank you for providing a link to your beautiful site. I was delighted to find five more photographers who share your vision and skills. I've bookmarked it, and will be revisiting often. Thanks for providing images large enough to enjoy! I trust you have them properly protected against theft! You need a photographer from Japan on your site (not me, I hasten to add!). This is a wonderful country for beautiful landscapes--such an amazing contrst with the dismal, cluttered cityscapes! And the scenes are often quite distinctive... I hope you find someone good enough to join your site and introduce our beautiful country!

I prefer this one than the potrait image. Beautiful caputre.

Only thing I would do is to remove the stick by clonning. It diffinetly an eye sore.

Congradulations on POTD image. well done.

Regards, ken.

I like the composition of the vertical better, but I can't get over the detail in the heron in this one... just for the detail fact alone I would go with this.
Excellent use of exposure to create such a dynamic image!

Excellent job, this one is better than newer one. Great sharpness on the bird, and nice going water. maybe he is loking for fishes.

Thank you all for your comments. Eric to answer your question this shot was taken with the Sigma 50-500EX Lens at around 400mm. The slide was scanned with my Canoscan FS-400US at 2600dpi and unsharp mask was applied after the scan to restore lost of sharpness during the scan.
Thanks Again

Fantastic eye-catching piece of photography from the silky movement of the water to the stillness of the bird. Wonderful contrast of speed and motion. Thanks for sharing. Belongs in a nature book.

Tack sharp! I'm interested in the quality of this lens. Can you tell me what the zoom you used, and what PS, because it looks as sharp as a razor?
Thx in advance
Cheers
Eric
