Mark: Right you are! On-camera flash. I was trying out my new Quantum battery pack with the 420EX. It will run much faster so I can use it with the birds with the external battery. It makes it easier to balance the subject and the background exposures. Pretty soon there'll be nothing but the winter birds left so I'm taking advantage.

You have the fill balanced just right with the ambient. Flash or reflector? Probably flash. Only mildly distracting is the purple blob on his back, but his being in mostly sharp focus tends to make one look away from the purple. With so many birds in your backyard, it's practically a studio there, eh? Enjoy, and have a great Fall season. Warm regards,
