Hi Ted--I was drawn to this image right away; you've really captured the intensity and moodiness of the scene. I was undecided on the composition too until I looked more closely. What I think you've come up with here is a classical composition in a really unusual way: the figure is what draws your eye to the left, no doubt about it but her head points the eye up to the upper right side of the frame where the shorter grasses are blowing. Then my instinct was to look directly left to the tall grasses and follow that decline to the bottom right side of the frame. X marks the spot...I'm immediately reminded of Théodore Géricault's Raft of the Medusa--it's heavy on the left side but the creation of the compositional "x" is so interesting. I also shoot IR the old fashioned way--as soon as I can find the SCSI cable for my scanner, I'll upload some images. I'd love to hear what you think. I also shoot with a red filter but have it on my list to buy an 87c. I read on a newsgroup post that Kodak recommends an ISO of 10 as a starting point for daylight and an ISO of 25 for tungsten lighting. Unfortunately you still need to bracket though...this is one thing about shooting IR that I find frustrating--5 brackets for each image makes that expensive little roll of film go fast. Congratulations on the Editor's Choice nod--it's well deserved.

Thanks. Whats the 87c, is that the "real" infrared filter? I always use deep red.

Great drama! I love it.
You might want to pick up an 87c filter. It will greatly increase the infrared films capability. The softmness is inherent in the film because it is infrared.
It works really well with foliage and people.

Beautifull. I was dragged to the photo by the composition (strong white form in the foreground), to discover all the rest: The strangeness and mistifying calm. This could be taken directly froma dream.
Really special, this one!

I'm not sure I was trying to say anything, just responding to a moment. I had asked her to bring the blanket because I knew it would be cold and just worked it into the shots. She had put her hand up because the sand was blowing in her eyes and I just used it. I think I liked the depth, how you can see clear to the waves, the darkness of the sand contrasting with the brightness of the blanket and figure, the way it comes strangely into the frame from the side. There was very little I was concious about at the time. Mystery, longing, timelessness, beauty; my usual intent. Don't avoid this beach: I'm finding I like my b&w best lately shot under these kind of conditions. I have some moody portraits from the same day I might post when I find them.

Thanks, I'd guess the softness and lack of grain is because of the fog and mist and coolness it was shot in and lack of specular light and foilage which seem to react to infrared the most. I like to shoot infrared but I admit, I've yet to understand how to predict the results. This was scanned from a print rather than the neg which may be minimizing grain as well. I don't have a darkroom, I go to the lab and scan my processed film: I don't know how they process it.

Hi Ted,
This is really beautiful. A wonderful softness overall. It seems pretty grainless at this size; how did you develop it?
