Thanks Linda! This lens has been tricky and I'm still trying to get the hang of it. Don't worry about looking at the spider. Honestly, I had a hard time taking the picture--I can't stand insects! Still, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to use the lens. :)

Laurie he's beautiful, well done, I think you got some good advice here and you're doing a great job with your new lens. I sometimes have trouble getting the perfect dof because I like my backgrounds blurred, there are so many factors involved, so I appreciate the advice here as well, it's always great to hear how other people do things, we can all learn from that..well done...I can't look at the spider though, sorry, knowing your work I'm sure it's excellent but they're nightmare material for me...:):)Linda

As Sara M says, the trick is to focus on the right part of the subject. On any creature wih eyes we naturally look at those and if they are sharp our brain will compensate for any lack of focus elsewhere. Otherwise focus on the head as again that is where we will look initially. On this shot the focus is probably about the 'shoulder' area of the lizard... if it were a bit further forward that would help with the overall effect. Moving objects are a real challenge as you may well be aware! As it stands though, you've done a cracking job of capturing the skin textures and the colours. And there is very little that isn't sharp here at all!
Nice composition with the lizard on the diagonal of the shot too. Well done!

Thanks Paul! I appreciate your helpful comments. I'm glad to hear that it isn't just me who has a focusing problem with the USM!

I'm slowly getting the hang of the macro lens. Maybe I should start out with slower subjects! I went back out and found a spider to shoot and I manually focused and increased my aperture and it seemed to help.

love the colors.. excellent macro... I have the same lens which is great... the real difficulty in shooting a macro is making sure that you are focusing on the right area.. as your finding out... this is even more difficult with a potential moving target. The aperture seems good but if you want more area in focus, you may want to go f/16+. The USM is great but sometimes due to lighting or because there are many areas (at different distances) to focus on closeup, the lens can get confused as to where the main focus should be even when selected with the camera (not sure how the rebel focuses). On a still object, I usually manually focus.... on subjects like this one, it could be hard due to the time you have to capture the subject (lizard). I agree with focusing on the eyes, looking at the image it seems that the main focus ended up being the sand in front of the lizard. The last thing is always try to use a tripod because the same problems with camera shake that effect a telephoto lens can impact a macro.. Still this is a great capture.. good work

I'm not expert enough to help, but I do think this is so excellent so much detail and the colours are lovely and I think the dof is good

Thanks Sara! I'm finding that the USM doesn't always focus where I want it to. I haven't had much experience with USM so I guess it's just going to take some practice. I like your iguana pic! :)

Try to focus on the eyes next time, as it seems here that you have focused on the body instead.. Rather than this, it's a really nice shot.. I like the colour..
Check this picture, which is taken by myself, you might be interested.. :) http://www.usefilm.com/image/771716.html I had the same problem, didn't focus on the eye.. lol
