James, What I meant in "little tighter" was I created mask around the rose so I could darken the background and get the rose to glow a little more, I could have made the mask a little closer/tighter to the rose. The result is that at the bottom of the rose the background is a little lighter than some of the other background.
I do like your suggestion to make a square framed version, rules are made to be broken, right! Thanks for such a details comment.
PS: your California Rose is exceptional, it looks like it was illuminated from within.

Flowers are one of my favorite subjects and this one is a beauty. I love the diffuse lighting against the dark background. You said you could have been a little tighter in the shadows. You might consider cropping this into a square image rather than a rectangle. I know, the "rules" say not to center your subject but I think this one would be an exception. Great job!

You have the great garden right near your home--a lot of photo chances. This is such a perfect rose. The way the petals swirl make me think it could be on a small turnaround so we get a look at all sides. Wonderful
