It may be cluttered, but there's a lot of clean lines and definitive colours here to prevent one from getting overwhelmed by it. (I kind of like the "palette" - the browns and blues are quite complimentary). This doesn't have the depth of "Christchurch", but I still think it works.
To me, there are two components to this photo: horizontal (bottom half), and vertical (top half). They work well together, although I wonder what this shot would look like had it been taken vertically (I feel there could have been a bit more room at the top). Alternately, I wonder what this would look like with the vertical lines cropped out completely (probably more clausterphobic, which isn't a good thing . . . but still, I wonder about stuff like that). :)
After looking at this photo for awhile, I have determined that the stairwell in the bottom right corner is my favourite part of the shot.

It would be fertile ground for you, maybe in a darker style - there is lots of brick as you can see...

Thanks Dirck! It may be that the lens contributes a little to the flat feel (85 mm short tele). Here is an alternative view with a 28 mm instead.

 A little more 3D feel |

Sort of cluttered, but neat at the same time - the lines are all clean and orderly so it doesn't feel jumbled. Interesting how 'flat' everything looks - almost no sense of depth as though all the buildings are occupying the same plane! I also like how the buildings seem to become more and more modern the further away they are!
