Beautiful and funny shot Chris! I followed your discussion with Roger, I'm guessing you're using the High-pass filter method and not the unsharp-mask, am I right? I agree with Roger that sharpening cannot be automated.

Dear Chris, the youg lady's joy at feeding the swan exudes from the photo, thus giving joy to the viewer too.Love the contrasting colours, too, the greenish hue of the platform, the blue of the waters and the white swan. Composition is endearing! Thanks for touring my portofolio and writing comments. I would welcome some creative criticism too, but not too technical. My camera is just a little toy, I cannot do so much with it. Best regards from Gabriela

Chris, I can assure you I do, always, notice. I just don't always say. And of course the effect varies depending on the subject, so sometimes the sharpening is just right. It sounds as if you apply the same degree of sharpening every time, and this may be the problem... in sharpening, if you are fussy over the quality of the results, one size definitely doesn't fit all. Over sharpening and over saturation are the two biggest problems for me on Usefilm. It's like barrel distortion and leaning verticals. Once you notice them, you can't ignore them...

I can see what you mean now, Roger, but it's curious that you don't seem to have noticed before as I haven't in any way changed my method or degree of sharpening. Now that you point it out on an enlarged version of the image I can see it on my upload ~ but only just! And only if I get really close to the screen and strain my eyes a little. I think you must have much better eyesight than me!!
Thanks again for your endeavours as helping me see this little aberration. I'm not sure what I can do about it as I would prefer the image to be reasonably sharp with miniscule artefacts that not sharp without them.
Have a great weekend!
Chris

I wonder if I'm making too much of something that doesn't seem to bother you... here's a final attempt to show you what I mean. The arrows in the image I have attached show paler areas becoming MUCH paler just before the transition to a darker area, and darker areas becoming MUCH darker just before the transition to a paler area. They form lines... this is the so-called edge-enhancement effect used in sharpening. When over-used, it produces obvious lines like you get on TV. Viewed from far enough away, these really work to make the image look sharper. It's just that to do their job they shouldn't become obvious. "Obvious" being a subjective call.

Chris, to continue our technical discussion, this image as it is now on Usefilm is only a little over 100k. Is that the size you uploaded? It seem to imply a very high degree of compression. The permitted maximum is 360k, and my guess is you were near the maximum before Usefilm applied further compression in the ratio 200dpi to 72dpi, almost 3:1. (Because this image, too, is at a nominal 200dpi.) This would take you down to about 100k. And you would get the JPEG artifacts and (from the compensating sharpening that Usefilm applies to "make up" for the extra compression) you would get the edge artifacts that mar this beautiful picture for me. Of course, if you watch a lot of TV you may not object to this kind of edge effect--it is very commonly used to increase the apparent sharpness of TV screen images.

Many thanks for your kind comment, John. To be honest, I'm a little weary after teaching on four of the letters to the chuches in Revelation for four consecutive evenings at the Wessex Bible Festival. But it was a wonderfully encouraging few days, with a good number of people attending the special services each evening. My best regards, Chris
