About This guy is a happy resident of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. He always greets me with this smile when I visit. Puffers' main defense is that when a predator approached, they puff up several times their size, showing porcupine-like fins, scaring away the bad guys. The divers at the Aquarium told me he doesn't really have teeth, just hard gums! All I know is that his bite hurts. So they tell me.

I've been tending to other projects for a couple of months and am now catching up on UF comments. Thanks for your October comment on my image, "Carved Detail."

Nice image of a puffer fish, Gary. Last winter in Baja I had one nearly land on my head. A gull had picked up, and I assume couldn't eat it. It landed about a foot from me and was still alive for a moment. -- Naomi

Thanks Ann. Yes the glass at the Aqurium of the Pacific is squeaky clean all the time. Volunteer divers clean it daily in all the big exhibits. This particular Puffer is very friendly and comes right up front and smiles for me. He is actually the size of about four footballs if that's a good comparison. He's full grown and is about as big as his breed gets. His jaws are very strong and the divers respect his presence when he's around. And he's very curious and likes to hang out with the divers who feed him mostly fresh lettuce and lot's of it. There is a glare problem even though I use available light, but by now I've got all that figured out and know exactly where the glare is and isn't. Thanks again, Ann...Gary

Great shot Gary. Don't know how you get such clarity through the glass unless of course you are swimming in there with him - haha. Cute title caught my eye. Good one. Cheers - Ann :)
