Hi Kes,
We have had some pretty good weather recently, but it's raining out today. You just gave me a good idea. I said I would go back to this place under different circumstances, so a shot from the new camera, that I have also been waiting for, would be appropriate. :)

Hi Andre,

Well,it is April 12....things should be a few degrees warmer by now. :)

Your title is perfect, as there is a sense of waiting or wanting presented here. Simple and powerful, very nice!

Absolutely... the shores of that lake on a windy day in January is no place to swing your kids.

Unless you really want to torture them, that is ;)

From the looks of things, they'll be waiting a long time, too. This scene just makes me cold :)

Thanks for nice comment on this one Jon.

It is always good to hear when one of our images gets through and "says" something to the viewer.

One of the good things about living here in Toronto, at least we never get those -37 temps. My oldest son is spending time near the Manitoba/Ontario/Minn. border. (Fort Frances) He says they regularly get -30 overnight. I couldn't stand it. :)

This is really, stunningly well put together. Something I noticed right away is the wave curling over on the right. It's the only bit of movement in the piece, and to me it says "nothing stays the same forever - not even this". Hope for spring indeed! (It is -37 with a windchill on top of that here today... sigh..)

Thanks Pablo,

As you also realize, children's playthings, abandoned can swell up a lot of emotion in people. A fairly easy subject to take advantage of, as long as the image isn't too sugary sweet.

I see exactly what you mean, Andre, about the missing side bars. The swings seem to hang from.. well, from the sky or something? I guess that this introduced some additional kind of that feeling of the surreal. It also goes hand in hand with the missing people in the deserted scene. A more "real" look by including the bars would diminish that.

I also think that the natural landscape-like horizontal geometry of the background is getting "disturbed" in a welcome manner this way. The swings somehow "divide" the monotony of the scene, but without turning the deserted look too weak.

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks Andrzej,
As I tried to explain to Nick, I was quite excited about this one. I had a feeling that it had some potential when I took the shots. As you say, there are a few other possibilities to continue the series. Maybe different seasons? Possibly an image with one swing swinging and one still?

Hi Nick,
I kind of liked this one because of the feeling that you are expressing here. I thought when I took it that it was going to look quite surreal even though it is completely natural and normal with no special effects to speak of. A very slight desaturation was applied overall and that's about it. The other thing I liked but can't quite explain why, is the fact that I haven't included the top or side bars of the swing set. For some reason the swings being suspended in the image alone seems somehow unreal, unsettling and more abstract.
Anyway, this one is one of my personal favourites and I couldn't wait to get it on the computer and see how it came out.

Thanks a lot Martin.
I bet most people at this site wouldn't have walked by this scene without grabbing at least a couple of shots. It just seemed the thing to do.

Narrative image Andre and provoking - I would actually go and try maybe first time without a lineup of kids waiting for their turn. Great symmetry captured in the frame contributing to nice formal composition of the picture. Cheers, NJ

It is much like what I intended to do in the past but much better than my attempts, Andre, since it does have that kind of "real feeling" that I failed to enhance as strongly as you did here!

There is enough detail/contrast and a quite balanced exposure for not going completely into "Fantasia Land", but still the reduced color palette in three color bands and the very easy geometry of a rather empty look allows also some of those "silent thoughts" during the cold time of the year. In its own way it is also a "moody landscape", but this landscape is more on the inside of the spectator.
