  Q. Pricing for Publication
James McGinnis
Asked by James McGinnis    (K=6045) on 5/16/2006
I know this question has been asked a million times but I need to ask it again...

How much is "fair" for a photo to appear in an ad for national publication?

I shot a national collegiate equine competition. One of the schools wants to use some of my shots for ads in national publications. I have NO IDEA what to charge. I remember finding a stock photographer's price list somewhere on the web but now, of course, I can't seem to locate it.

If any of you have pricing schedules that would be appropriate for this, please let me know...I'm open to suggestions!

How big is the photo going to be reproduced?

How many copies are being printed?

How big is the advertisers budget?

"One of the schools wants to use some of my shots for ads in national publications."

That sounds like multiple uses of the same images, normally you give specific license to use certain images at a certain size on a specific date/issue. If you are just selling these images outright to them forever to use in any advertisment, I would charge at least (absolute minimum) $400 per image.

A better way to do it would be to license the images for their use for, say - 2 years for $100-200 per image.
