  Q. d50 vs d70s?
Carlen Boersema
Asked by Carlen Boersema   Donor  (K=6789) on 2/5/2007
My dad has hinted at getting me a Nikon D50 for my birthday. I heard the D50 and the D70 are going to be phased out because the D40 and D80 are going to take their place, hence sale prices.

I am looking at the Henry's website now. The D50 is listed as $619.99 and the D70s is listed as $669.99. That's without the 18-55mm lens.

To me, it's worth the extra $50 to get the D70s. But does it really matter? Would I be happy with the D50? I mostly shoot outdoors when I'm in my serious photographer mode.

If I bought the D70s I wouldn't need a new memory stick. I would need one with the D50.

Mainly, I'm looking to see if there is any way I can cut costs. I know it is well worth the money and will last me years but that still doesn't change the fact I'm a semi-broke college student. :P

Go for the D-70s and add the little extra bee nuts, it worth it and you will enjoy its quality

Hard to compare without having used both Carlen . . . though the consensus I can tell you ahead of time will be to go for the D70S. I've seen it over and over (and over) again.

I use the D50. If I were just starting . . . likely the D80. But for learning, the D50 has been a friend and is a bit more forgiving.

Doyle I <~~~~~

If you pass by a camera just because it's rumoured to be replaced soon, you'll never buy one.
Just because it's not the very latest HOT HOT tech doesn't mean it's no good...
By now cameras mainly show small improvements to previous models in the same category, no longer the massive differences like between the first and second generation cameras of 5-10 years ago.

As to D50 vs. D70(s), there is no comparison.
If you can at all afford the D70, get that one as it's far superior. If you can't afford it, save up until you can.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice, but I just wanted to say one thing. I'm not buying one simply because it's being discontinued or it's on sale. I've actually wanted the D50 for two years. I've done a lot of online shopping and thinking about what camera I'd like. To me this is a worthwhile investment. Now all I have to do is convince my dad!

Carlen, you might want to check Vistek (www.vistek.ca) they are usually cheaper than Henrys, their store is downtown Toronto.

Carlen, you misunderstand me.
A lot of people will pass up on something if there's so much as a rumour that it might be discontinued at some point or that a replacement is going to be announced half a year from now.

That's what I was warning against, not buying the thing :)

Oh ok sorry I misunderstood. :)

I have another question: What lens would be best with the D70s?
