  Q. Should I purchase?

Asked by Julie Ross    (K=143) on 6/16/2007
This morning I noticed a listing on a local selling website for photography lighting. They are described as such "The Impact 2-light 1000 watt maximum floodlight kit is built around the Impact true 500 watt 12" reflector unit with a high-heat ceramic socket. Each light's wooden control handle stays cool, and has a cord with in-line switch. The kit includes two light stands, and two daylight (4800°K) balanced screw-in floodlights." and come on adjustable tripods. Since I am new to this and want good general lighting for stills and maybe some portraiture, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. They are asking $50 for the pair. Should I jump on it?

Julie,

Run as fast as you can from this kit... I bought a Norman Allure kit, which is very close to this 1 and I gave it to a buddy very quickly after seeing the results... ;(

These tungsten lights are way too hot and they don't provide enough light to shoot anything worth a damn... I kept blowing breakers in my electrical box to no avail for a good shot...

Invest your $ in a cheap mono-light set for the "best" results, IMHO,

Martin

Julie,

Oh, by the way I spent over $600.00 on the Norman kit, so I do know what I saying... ;)

Thanks for your response. I wonder how similar the two kits are since the brand new lights that I saw of the kind advertised are only $160? (On B&H's website.) Since I honestly know nothing about these things yet I really would love more information.

The problem with shopping at the website that you gave is that I simply can't come close to buying anything there, I don't have the money.

The people selling the lights told me I could come pick them up tonight if I wanted them so if there is any more info or comments to be had I would welcome the help in deciding. Thanks!

Here is a link to the item being sold - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/465550-REG/Impact__Fluorescent_2_Light_Kit.html, only the listing gives info for different lightbulbs I believe.

Is this the same as what you had?

Can anyone tell me about these of give any other info? Thanks!
