I went from the 300D Rebel to the 30D about a year ago. I love the 30D. Haven't touched my Rebel since, though I keep it as a back-up.
The current Rebel (XTi) is much smaller than the Rebel 300D, which is why I wouldn't even think of buying one. Somebody with small hands might feel different. Technically, I don't think there is anything wrong with a Rebel XTi.
But the 30D just seems to be a much better camera. I can't think of much as to back up that statement from a tech standpoint. But the large view screen has been great compared to the small one on the Rebel. I was about to buy a 20D when somebody here told me about the larger screen format on the 30D which was coming out in a few weeks... so I waited.
I recommend, if you can afford it, to go for the 30D!

Oh, one other thing... I would also suggest you buy a body only, not the kit with the 18-55 lens. Take the money you save from the kit and put it towards a good lens. My suggestion on that (I just got one) is to get the Tamron 18-250 3.8/6.3 telephoto... Seems to be a very fine lens.
and shop, shop, shop. Check B&H prices... and then Competitive Camera in Dallas... (they'll beat B&H by at least a few dollars, especially if you price compare by telling them the B&H price). I bought My 30D from them (body only) for about $1200. They sold me the Tamron lens for $495 ($499 was B&H price and the camera shop closest to me wanted way over nearly $600 for the 18-200 MM - they didn't even have the new 18-250 MM.

I already have a canon 28-105 3.5-4.5 lens for my film camera. Can I use that with the 30D?

Amy -- Both digital Canon models will take EF or EF-S series lenses. Look on your lens for the "EF" designation. --Best to you, Jan

I would get the 40D or the XTi. For a casual photographer like myself, I really think the XTi is more than enough. Body is small but I think of that as an advantage since you are more inclined to take it with you.

Agree with Lily, 40D is the way to go. Now that Christmas shopping has started you can get one of these 12 or 18 month/no interest deals with the stores Credit Card. So if your Camera costs $1,200 you just send in a hundred $$ a month for 12 months - it's like getting a free loan. B & H - bhphoto.com has a 6 month plan. CIRCUIT CITY has different deals, right now it's 12 months Best Buy will have deals come and go till Christmas. Best way to do since it stretches out your payments for 1 or more years. I have a ton of Canon and Mac/Apple equipment and I do it all that way - no interest deals, works out really well. Mark PS Oh, also check out Calumet - Calumetphoto.com (one of the best stores/small chains in the USA - very pro oriented). AMAZON.com also sells cameras and computers - great selection/fast service
