Hi Guys!

I have just ordered an Epson R2400 A3+ Printer. Can any of you good folk, please let me know any hints and tips that would be good for me, including what paper to use for my photo/art printing, both Black and White, and Colour. PHEW!

Look forward to hearing your comments very soon.

Ian

I have a R1800 and love it. Can't say about the R2400. My whole goal was to be able to print out large prints for myself. Then I was asked to put my work into a gallery for sales.

So the hunt was on for not only paper but mats. I have used several different brands of paper for printing from the R1800 and found really no difference in quality. At least not to my eye.

The biggest problem I had was finding paper that did not carry the brand name watermark on the back. Like "Epson". I just felt that having something other than Kodak/Fuji/etc. on the back ruined the print for a potential buyer. Not that they would ever notice nor care, I just did not want the buyer to think I printed it at home even though I have an archival printer.

If that doesn't bother you, Epson has a great line of various papers.

But so far, by quality and with no watermarks on the back, I have found that Ilford Printasia does a great job.

All that being said, I now have decided to begin using an on-line photo lab. I just got my first order in and I believe it was cheaper than printing them at home. I needed 5X7, 8X10 and 11X14. Finding retail paper in the 5X7 and 8X10 is next to impossible as is finding 11X14 in a glossy finish.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Hey there Ian, I don't have a larger format printer (oh how I envy you!!! LOL) but I also use Ilford Printasia paper in my little HP printer.
I think that the Printasia Photo Pearl paper is by far the best finish in their line of great papers.
cheers, Beks

Hey Gaylester.... The place I just used is www.fotki.com, a photo storage/"sharing" site. They have free accounts with limits. I'm not sure if you have to have a premium account (about $35 per year) for printing.

Prices are great. I think I paid $2.50 per 11X14. Turn around was great, too. I ordered on a Friday, I think, and they shipped by Tuesday. They noted a "delay" because of the larger prints. A friend placed his on the same day as me, smaller prints, and they were shipped out on Monday.

They print on Fujifilm paper. Their shipping charges are very decent, too. Seems like they actually under-quote their shipping. Both times I've ordered, I noticed I couldn't ship for the price they charged. (I think it was $9.00 shipping and the items arrived in two separate Priority Mail packages with tubes, boxes and packing materials).

Let me know if you check it out and what you think.

Ian,

I used an R2400 at the photo lab I worked at and it gave excellent results. Our customers couldn't tell the difference from prints we made on the 2400 and prints we did in the traditional color darkroom. When we told them they usually didn't believe us. You'll be happy with it.

The best papers in my experience are Ilford and Epson.

We tried several different brands of paper but found that the ink didn't bond well and the ink could be scratched off easily, or would smear. With the Epson and Ilford this didn't happen. Both are a little more expensive than what you'd find in a discount store but the quality and durability of your final print will be worth the it.

I have an R1800 that I use at home and its the same...Epson and Ilford work best.

For the best print quality you can possibly get, make sure your monitor is calibrated then download and use Epson's ICC profiles.
