Personally I like Tokina much more and many of their lenses (according to reviews) are supperior to Tamron. Saying thia I would suggest getting the TOKINA 16mm - 50mm F/2.8 Pro DX Autofocus Zoom Lens

Tokina, always. They're way better than any other 3rd party lens maker except the Sigma EX line.

Hi Matteo, I own the tamron 17-50mm lens and it is fantastic. A sharp lens even wide open. It has been compared to the canon 17-55mm for image quality but of course not construction. As for tokina, build quality is generally better than tamron but they suffer CA very badly. I sold my Tokina ATX PRO 80-200mm F2.8 because the CA was so bad. I know others with Tokina 12-24 that also suffer CA badly. I highly recommend the tamron 17-50mm F2.8. Regards, Collin.

Thank you all dear friends, for your higly appreciated suggestions!
I finally got the following equipment: Nikon D80 TAMRON ZoomSP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Nikon SB-800
and I hope I've done a good choice, even if by now I'm so frustrated... I was so eager to start using my new camera... I decided to start in the easiest way (at least by my point of view), so I decided to set the WB on "Auto" and going around shooting. Well... disgusting results all pics seems to have a blue dominant layer on them... Than I discovered that WB works not at its best in "Auto" mode...

I don't understand why you consider the shot disgusting... in just a few minutes of color balancing, color adjustments, USM, gradient curve, and a slight rotation for crooked horizon in Photoshop, your shot looks like this... not at all disgusting, very fine shot actually.

Ciao Dave,
thanks a lot for your contribution! Well, perhaps "disgusting" is too strong, but I just wanted to highlight the fact that I got about 400 shots with a bleu dominant due to WB setting on "Auto"... now I know that this is a well known problem I have a lot lo learn about this camera and all of its functions!

Another of the problems of digital in general. Your image has a lot of blue in it so the sensor and associated software tend to pump up that blue all over the scene in order to give higher saturation in the dominant tones.
