1. Don't have one 2. negatives 3. Never always scan in full 48 bit rgb (read the article on scanning if you don't know why) 4. if you want to scan bw well shoot tmax 400cn or ilford xp2 they are chromogenic bw films and will scan far better than the conventional silver halide on the home user level scanners.

Every instance has an optimum type of film to record the scene based on the conditions and effect you want to record. I like Ilford's PAN F but I rate it at EI-20 and the long exposure times only allow for photos that don't require faster shutter speeds. Most B&W film's contrast can be controlled when developing so the "inherent" contrast built into the film is not as important once you understand how each film functions and know how to develop for each circumstance. I shoot 35mm so I always try to bias by film selection toward finer grain when possible. However I shoot HP5 at 1600 and can get good 5x7 prints (minus some shadow detail).
Scanning B&W film is not always easy and the negative is not always the final "interpretation" I want for the image, so sometimes I will make a print and scan it on a flat bed.
I always scan in color and convert it in photoshop to match the print.

1) Lately I've been using Ilford Delta 100 and before that I was a long time Tmax user but lately the Delta 100 has been nice. Also I love to use the XP2 and T400CN films for "playing around" with. It doesn't cost me as much to get those puppies developed (I don't have the time or chemicals or equipment currently to develop my own.. else I would)
2) Currently I scan from prints.. one day... somewhere in the near future.. I hope to snag a film scanner and scan direct from negs
3) Again, since I scan from prints, I'm scanning in Grayscale. I don't know what it's going to be like once I get a film scanner.
Cheers, dave

I shoot Tmax 100 or 400, sometimes Ilford or Plus X, rarely TriX anymore. Medium format negs I have scanned on an Imacon, 16 bit grayscale. 35mm I scan myself on a Polaroid Sprintscan, usually as an RGB black and white positive. Sometimes I scan 8x10 prints on my flatbed, which can be pretty good, occasionally negs though the results are not very good.
