  Q.  Camera Manufacturers : How many will survive????

Asked by Chuck Freeman    (K=13616) on 8/19/2006
I hope this "pundit" is wrong. However, I personally think there will be only three camera ( digital) left to survive. They are NIKON, CANON, (POSSIBLY) OLYMPUS. The others may well be doomed! What are your thoughts?

I see Nikon and or Canon survive, possibly not both of them (I do see a possible future where one buys out the other).
Olympus (maybe) and Leica will likely survive, serving niche markets like medical and aerial photography, space systems, things like that.

Sony stands a good chance in the consumer market because of their strong market position in video cameras which allows them to divest part of the investment in other related divisions and take potential losses in still cameras as marketing expenses towards other products.

HP and Kodak might have a similar strategy, sell digital cameras at or below production cost to fuel demand for printer supplies (as Kodak did with their box cameras in the early days, fueling demand for film and processing services).

Who knows? :) We will buy best cameras.

Most people in fact buy whatever is cheapest at the time, rather than the best (or even the best value for money)...
Most others will buy whatever the salesperson advises them, which is usually what brings the store the highest margin rather than what is best suited to the buyer's needs and requirements.

I hope www.dpreview.com and www.imaging-resource.com websites will be availabe in the future, and will be able to keep up with new camera production. Then, by checking test images of particular camera will be easy to find the camera Jeroen is talking about. Buy the way, those websites helped me a lot before I bought both digital cameras I used and use. Check detail of each test image, and specs of cameras.
Optics rules. Bodies have to be as good as lenses you own.

Hi Chuck,

I'd bet on Canon, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony.
On Medium Format, Hasselblad, Mamiya, and Pentax. Oh, Holga for sure!

I believe these will pass throught Darwin's evolution challenge. Others will be hit by asteroids on the way home.

All have managed to update their thoughts into digital era, some have unique products, specially on medium format.

By the way, digital won't have that much of an impact on medium and up formats. If anyone have doubts, buy a new scanner.

There's hope, Chuck. But this isn't necessarily a war.

Regards,

José Azevedo

I enjoyed your reply. I agree, except the fact that I do not think PENTAX will survive. Go0od insight you have . Thanks.
Chuck
