  Q. What Makes a photograph funny?
Jon O
Asked by Jon O'Brien    (K=11321) on 8/23/2006

I have recently been going through the "Humour" category in some detail trying to work out what elements must exist for a photograph to be truly funny. I notice that "Animals being cute" is the single largest group of photos in that category, follwed by "Children being cute". I suspect that "Juxtaposition of Incongruous elements" is probably a good category, but possibly this is a sub-set of "Visual Double Entendre" (the Visual Pun). Any thoughts?

Incongruous juxtaposition and double entendres both, to my way of thinking, qualify as humor. These photos, I think, are meant for their ability to bring a smile or a laugh . . . not for their inherent artistic merits . . . though they may have merit artistically as well.

Do I have any thoughts?? A few (don't listen to the wife)! For Example:

Why Does Man Kill? He kills for food. And frequently there must also be a beverage! :)

I have here (http://www.usefilm.com/image/1127476.html) my wife's attempt at landscape humor for your perusal . . . laughter has healing powers!

Okay that's pretty funny... Irony as the delivery vehicle, I would say. I read somewhere that most jokes depend on pain for their humour. But perhaps visual humour is more subtle than that?

Subtle? It can be subtle though I'm seldom accused of being subtle. Still my wife's portfolio also has Garden Gnomes (Statuary) tying up the dog and Rina has shots of super hero action figures (complete with story line and absolutely hilarious comments) on the beach . . . starting with http://www.usefilm.com/image/1105894.html. These kinds of shots may not be inherently funny . . . but tend to start the viewer with a smile . . . usually they become very funny due to the added 'about' section and comments . . . much like a cartoon has programmed the mind to think funny but really becomes funny when the words are added! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~~

I agree with Doyle that with some photos to have their humorous affect upon the viewer the caption associated to the pic is needed to bring home the humor. Sometimes we see something and it makes us think of something funny, once it it spelled out why we took the shot others suddenly get the humor as well. Example being this shot,

http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=816502

The scene of the lone, almost nervous looking lion approaching the two females made me think of how often men must muster the courage to approach a group of girls at a club. It made me chuckle but I knew I better explain the joke a bit when I posted.

Other shots are humorous through the sheer visual irony such as this shot I took while living in Japan,

http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=757654.

I am interested though in seeing other ways to deliver humor through photography.

It helps to have a shot with a pastor, a priest, and a rabbi, all walking into a bar

Hmmm... A shot with a pastor, a priest and aq rabbi heh? i tried that but couldn't find anything humourous in it....:)

Pastor (reverend) and Rabbi: http://www.usefilm.com/image/1175977.html
Priest (cardinal): http://www.usefilm.com/image/1173951.html

I tried everything: mounting them together, putting them up-side down, converting them to B&W, you name it - it just doesn't seem to get funnier....

Ah! I get it! It's the bar that makes it funny!

On second thought, I have a photo of a bar that isn't funny either...

I guess I just don't have the sense of humour it takes...

Cheers,

Hugo

I always heard that words that start with K are funny. Hmmm.

Maybe it works better on video: they all walk into a bar and say "ouch" ;)

A dog walks into a bar on three legs limping . . . his useless paw hangs in the air and he stops at the bartender.
"Wanna beer?", asks the bartender.
"Nope," said the dog. "I'm looking for the man that shot my Pa!"

The funny photo would be of everybody's face when they get it!!

Two guys walk into a bar...

You think they would have seen it.

Sure... laugh now... :-] .. But the problem is trying to take a picture that is itself funny. If you took a picture of a priest, a rabbi and a minister walking into a bar, it could quite possibly be funny, but only because we were able to make the connection between the photograph and the joke. The same with a picture of a three-legged dog entitled "Looking for the Man Who Shot My Pa". Might elicit a groan or a small chuckle... Which is the other thing - not too many belly laughs out there in Photo Humour Land.

More later... I think there's a short paper in this.
