Q. Critiquing the Masters

Absolutely brilliant, and making me think (hence all the blue smoke coming from my ears). I won't say anything more, but I'm interested in comments people might have after reading it.

I find this very funny - esp. the comment:

"This looks contrived, which is not a bad thing. If this is a planned shot, it just didn't come out right. If you can round up Mario, I would do it again. This time put the camera on a tripod and use the smallest aperture possible to get the best DoF. What I would hope for is that the railings are sharp and that mario on the bike shows a blur. Must have the foreground sharp, though. Without that, the image will never fly."

"This time put the camera on a tripod" fancy telling Henri Cartier-Bresson that??? Ohhh... too much.

Yeah - but. However. We all know of the 'expert' critiques of Ansel Adams, a genuine master. There are schools of thought, in anything. Some people will never agree on such basics. And not everything done by the master will equally please him or her, or the critic, or the fan. It is okay to criticize something by Wright Morris, or Avedon, or those preferred here (http://www.pdngallery.com/legends/), or any of a hundred famous photographers. Rowell had some outstanding photos. But in order for some to be, others were not, etc. Weston was no different. The satire of the piece could easily be a self-parody, at that link.

There is no one standard of beauty, in other words. But one might argue that theirs, ultimately, is better than others - based on their standards, otherwise. And for that alone, some will refuse to agree.
