Don't be lazy and keep the lenses both. Optical quality (and thus the resulting images) are a lot better.
You might want to consider (IF you can afford to) to return the 70-300 and getting the 80-400VR instead. The image stabilisation might come in handy when working from a vehicle with people moving around in it.

Definitely don't be lazy. especially if this is a once in a lifetime trip. You will get a lot of images if you use one of the very latest generation of the tamron 28-300 XR lenses, but you still lose quality at both ends of the spectrum. The example i have played with showed a bit of chromatic aberation at the long end with high contrast subjects. and at the wide end it showed some barrel distortion that the nikon 24-120 controls a lot better.
I still like a 3 lens setup. If you can afford the cost ($900) and the weight, tokina has a 100-300mm f4 zoom that is simply a stellar performer. they also have a low cost wide-angle zoom 19-35mm f3.5-4.5 that is excellent for outdoors and nature and is quite light. mine has been to west africa bouncing around in the back of a pajero for days at a time and other than a few internal dust specs, it never complains. you have the 24-120 already and i can't fault it much, but for portability and sharpness i prefer the 28-105.
Given your current inventory either keep it as it is and just accept that you will need to change lenses on occasion, or if you really want a tele zoom that will improvbe the chances of success, the suggestion of Jeroen to think about the 80-400VR is a good one.

Get a tripod and a second camera body for the lenses. You should have a backup! I'll see you there, going to SA twice in 2003! ;) cheers

Keep the two lenses that you alreade have. Both will suit a satari trip well. Lightweight and quite small and still the optical quality is rather good.

I'd deffiently carry both. You'll need everything from wide to long tele for landscapes to animals. Even 300 might not be long enough. Most Africa travel/shooters carry at least 400 or a 2x converter on a fast 200-300 lens. Also bean-bags are very flexible stabilzers in place of tripods when shooting from Jeeps, SUV's or Land Rover type vehicles. Can't wait to see those pix!
