About One of the apes that lives wild on the Rock of Gibraltar.

This chap was watching me intently while I was poking my lens in the face of a seagull (see previous two images). He had a rather superior attitude, seemed somewhat critical and didn’t smile.

He wouldn’t look into the camera, keeping his head turned away from the sun. His deep set eyes stayed in the shadows and I didn’t get a shot that made direct contact. But then I guess he’s been through this many times before and was just stringing me along.

Art, thanks so much for your comment. I checked the original shot and it was not cropped at all, so I'm stuck with the sliced off head. Except that the next shot I took is... with the whole head in the frame! Same position and zoom, so I lose some of the body. I'll try to get round to processing and posting it, but it may be a while as I'm off back to Belgrade again tomorrow for a couple of weeks.

greetings aj,. the darkness of the eye's i think are best left as shot, gives him the privacy he obviously longs for & wants you to go away,. tis captured well aj,. only critique is maybe all of his head should be in the frame,. best regards art,.

Hello AJ, Did you paid the monkey to pose or he is just a real snob? (LOL LOL !) Great Shot!

Great shot AJ ~ I like the fact he's looking away from you ~ it adds more interest... you could always adjust the levels on a separate layer to pull some detail from the eyes but I like it as is :)

Great shot AJ.

Perfect lighting to add to the mood of your "About", he does look a little tired of the intruding cameras.

All the best,
Ed

One other approach to consider if you have upgraded to PS CS3 and if the original is in RAW.
When opening the RAW file CS3 offers many new options including "FILL LIGHT". I have no idea how Adobe works the magic of it but it seems to bring out underexposed areas and leaves other areas alone. It is magic! The result will be different than dodging although dodging should do the trick.

Thanks Jan. I have found this one (and the others I took at the same time) rather frustrating. Everything is just about there... except the most important bit - the eyes. But following your suggestion, a quick look just now suggests that dodging might just do it.

AJ -- Excellent portrait but because it is all about the eyes I would like to see a little dodging in the shadows around the eyes. Just a very slight amount.
--Best to you, Jan

It's a very god portrait, excellent placement for the little monkey into the frame and also excellent focus and quality on its hairy texture, very nice lighting too.
Best regards!

It is indeed a barbary macaque, Ann. Though they live wild on Gib, they are not actually native, having been introduced from North Africa in the 18th century.

Perhaps with all his experience, he just knows he looks best in profile!
Beautifully sharp, and great bokeh in the background. I think the DOF is just right.

Thanks Nicole. Do you mean the fur looks soft as in fluffy or soft as in burred? I'm always conscious of the need for a fast shutter when using this lens in full zoom, but perhaps I should have gone for a slightly smaller aperture here to get just a bit more DOF.
