Hi Dave,
Of all the Polar Bear images posted, I think I like the colour and texture of this one best. The bears lined themselves up for a nice composition too. One day, I will make that trip. The train sounds interesting, if you have the time. But the flight is tempting.

Hi Fred, thanks for the comments! I did a one day excursion by flying up from Winnipeg and coming back the same night. I've heard the train ride is very interesting, but pretty slow as it takes two days. I think they have to really take it easy going over the muskeg. All my bear shots were taken with the 70-300 from the Tundra Buggy. You could certainly use a 500mm lens and have the potential of more good shots, although usually you can get fairly close. Most of my shots here are cropped somewhat. Hope that helps! I'll be waiting to see your shots from RMNP!

Dave: Great shot. We've been wanting to go up to Churchill but it never seems to happen. Tell me, did you take the train and would I have any use for a 500mm lens on the trip? I keep hearing conflicting opinions. One guy said take as big a lens as you can and another said 300mm was enough.

Dave I would only recommend the train to the hardy. Just think about sleeping on a church pew sitting up. It is an overnight trip and if I ever do it again I would get a bunk bed suit. Worth every penny. Cheers Alvin

Knowing how fierce and dangerous those creatures are, it's a good job you had a nice loooong telephoto lens on your K20D! I am having a lot of fun with my little K-x (little brother to your Pentax), although I mostly play at the wide-angle end of the zoom.

I like the way they're ignoring you, it looks much more natural. You've made it look like polar bears are a commonplace sight and you're getting good resolution from that lens.
