I don't know how I miised this shot - this is a real beauty - the flow of the water effect is perfect - the dark tones at the bottom push the eye to the water - well done - K

I think this one has to be my favorite out of all of the water fall shots! I love the dark colors found in the rocks and of course love the efrfects of a slow shutter here! This is simply a spectacular view. You are a perfectionist and I can appreciate that, the postworked version is much more refined then the original and know that I don't think I would have done it any different. Congrats on the award, it is well deserved! :)

did you misunderstand? no. not completely. you are right in that the water will always look white. however, taking your particular exposure as an example, had you exposed for a fraction less time the whiteness would be a bit less white. a few steps below "pure" white. pure white is interpreted by the brain as missing color or blown out. beyond the camera's recordable dynamic range.
so, my suggestion was to expose a bit less so as to get "some" color instead of pure white. (you can do this with levels, btw). however, doing so would require an ND filter in order to keep the exposure time long. this way you would get the long shutter effect without making the water go pure white in color. in essence the ND buys you that little bit of extra exposure room to play with.
not sure if i'm making sense. it's easier to show this visually than explaining it with words alone. take a look at my shot "ghosts" ( http://www.usefilm.com/image/762087.html ) for the only example i have handy. that is a 13sec exposure (during the day but in shadow). notice how the water, while white, is not pure white. let me know if you'd like more clarification on this as i'm not sure i've explained myself correctly.
take care, tom

Thanks for the sugestion, Tom. I'm not sure an ND filter would have made much difference. I did expose using the partial metering off the water.
Fact is, the water is trapping air as it falls, and looks white, so what the long exposure has done is simply record those streaks over and over.
Did I misunderstand?

angelo, i love these waterfalls! i'm sure they are well worth whatever hike is required to get to them. being a big-picture kind of guy, i prefer this one as it shows the water in an interrupted flow through the frame. i like that you give us a peek to the falls behind. just enough to imagine a much taller and free-falling waterfall.
i noticed, however, that the water is almost if not completely blown out. it's not disturbing at all, btw, but i did see it eventually. i see you had to push to f/22 in order to extend your shutter speed. try using an ND 4 or even an ND 8 filter next time you are there. this should "buy" you and extra 2 or 3 stops and should be enough leeway to allow you a 1sec shutter with ease while keeping the histogram away from the right edge. depending on the time day you maight also be able to get up to 5secs which would make for a very interesting look on the water.
anyways, a very well deserved bip on an excellent image.
take care, tom

This is a beautiful photo, Angelo. It reminds me of a brides veil spreading out behind her. Your light and shade exposures are excellent, also. I love waterfall pics. I took some myself yesterday at my local national park a few minutes away. Congratulations on your win. Cheers, Ann.

Kunal,
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I am attaching an "unprocessed" version. All that I have done with this one is a RAW to 16-bit TIFF conversion (I did adjust the exposure +1 EV and set the white balance in the RAW converter software, but I hope you don't object to that), then in PS simply resize and save for web.
I must, however, object to what you say as you imply "film photographers" do not manipulate the image. As a film photographer, you can have your image printed onto photographic paper. You can select the paper to the right level of contrast. You can set the right colour filtrations. You can dodge and burn. My work with PS in most cases is equivalent to only that: film developing and printing. Nothing that a good colour printer wouldn't be able to do, only a lot cheaper!
The sensor, in RAW mode, captures lots of detail, but is very short on dynamic range. All I am doing is bringing out that detail that was subdued by the short dynamic range. In this case, you will see that I have brough out some of the bushes from the shadow on the right, and adjusted the colour balance a bit in the rocky areas.
Then I applied the UnSharp Mask: a filter that simulates what was done in the traditional printing houses when printing film images!
I would be interested to hear your thoughts in reply to this. It is an interesting discussion.
Thank you once more for your visit.
Regards, Angelo.

Very nice image. I would be interested to see this image which is not PS worked. The subject is powerful so personally I would like to avoid PS work other than brightness/contrast.
Don't get me wrong for the thoughts here. When we add layers and stuff , to me as a film photographer background, I feel that we are not capturing the essense of the image but we are manipulating the image with the post processing in PS.
I like the image nonethless. -Kunal

Armando,
It will all depend on the intensity of the light. If you over-expose, it will blow to white. You can always use a neutral density filter (or gray filter) and/or a polarizer to cut down the amount of light.

Beautiful waterfall, great view!!! Love the white water and the dark surroundings... and the small waterfall in the background is a great addition (I wonder if you couldn't show a bit more of that....), well 'worked over', super shot to begin with... well done!!! BTW I don't want to nit-pick but there seems to be a very little black speck (a sensor or lens dust particle???) in the waterfall, right of center, one finger (to avoid cm and inch confusion.. ;-D) below the small protruding rock.... might get that 'fixed' in/on the original....
