Thanks for your detailed critique Hugo. I know what you mean about "including too much" --- I wasn't really happy with any of the compositions I tried because I couldn't reduce the image to only hold the good parts. (I just posted another composition that I thought came about as close as this one.) The sky is quite hot as you pointed out, mainly so that the snow would look about right. The high key look intrigued me, so I didn't try to bring it back closer to reality. However, your comment got me thinking that maybe I should have controled the sky better.

Hi James, my first reaction to this shot was one of awe. Increadible how you pull it off, every single time. As if you're able to produce masterpieces by the dozen.... And it is another very strong shot.
But (sorry, can't stop being tedious and nitpicky...) The longer I look at it, the more I feel there's something unusual about this photo. First, I think the sky is a bit washed out; Of course, it's nearly impossible to prevent with the strong backlighting, but the area right above the shrubs just to the right of the photo seems a bit manipulated and too bright in respect to the overall subtility of the tones. Secondly, I feel the space on the left side of the image allows the viewers' eye to escape a bit. The secondary stream seems to be a bit redundant, if you see my point. Cropping a bit closer to the tree on the left would, IMO balance the composition better (or panning to the right, but then again, I'm unaware of what elements that would include in the composition)
For me, the prime point of attention is the icy river, and the pastel tones, together with the fog against / through the treeline, which make this photo tick. I can 't suppress the feeling that you included a bit too much in this shot to fully appreciate the beauty of it. Hope you get my drift,
