About I think this is least convincing of the three. Because of the relative lack of motion of the subject, I used radial (zoom) blur to deal with an obtrusive background.

Pat, I am pleased that you liked the photo and the treatment. It was an experiment for me, so the next time I will know what I am doing.

Thanks, dave! The ball is a bit surreal in its suspension.

Eb - A really PROFESSIONAL looking shot! This looks like a painting. Really nice.

A great effect here, Eb, and I like the way you've caught the ball in the air!

Jonathan, that's the original zoom effect! You are right that it would be better but may not always be possible to plan this technique during fast action shooting. I think there are ways to improve the photoshop technique.

Here's a blur suggestion that I've tried and have had some success with. Set your camera on shutter priority for about a 1/2 second exposure or maybe a bit longer. Focus on your subject with a wider focal length and, while shooting, zoom in at the same time. You should get the same kind of blur, while retaining the clarity of the subject and it's a bit more interesting than using the radial blur in photoshop
