This monument was designed and built by the Foggini dynasty of sculptors and architects: Giovanni Battista, Giulio and Pier Francesco, and was completed in 1739. The remains of Galileo were moved to this spot on 12 March 1737, the date on which the index finger of his right hand was removed. Before that time the mortal remains of the great scientist were kept "in storage" in this same church of Santa Croce, in the Cappella del Noviziato. The reason that Galileo was not buried with full ceremony in the main body of the church at the time of his death was the condemnation that he received at the hands of the ecclesiastical authorities in 1633.
