Location City -  Robertson
State -  WESTERN CAPE
Country - South Africa   South Africa
About Bidens formosa - a naturalised weed originally from central America and the West Indies. Brought into South Africa in the horse fodder imported during the Anglo Boer war. No commonly found in disturbed places on the central highveld and grasslands of South Africa where it can become a nuisance in maize fields. This is the first time I found this weed in the Western Cape, in front of a farm stall where it was probably planted by the owner for its beautiful display during the autumn months. Standing more than 2 meters high with masses of pink, white and maroon flowers on display. It was about 30 minutes before sunset and I just had to stop to take a few shots.

It was a fairly windy afternoon and I had a lot of trouble to photograph the flowers without using full flash. I decided then to go for a long exposure to capture the motion of the wind. I used the built in camera flash for fill together with a slow shutter speed (1/4 second). Used my polarizer filter to bring down the speed. Uncropped and slightly adjusted the colour and sharpness in PS.

This is a very nice image, Joggie. The movement in the flowers adds a nice contrast to the one almost still blossom. Cheers, Ann.

The fill flash did its work, Joggie, giving an even and full exposure throughout the blossoms. I particularly like the vibrant colors, the even but interesting composition throughout, and the fact that one blossom is sharp while all the rest are moving in the wind. Chance or choice? A really fine photograph, one for hanging. Anson

Well intented, Joggie. But I do admit to prefering these beautiful flowers without the motion blur.

For what you were trying to do, I think this is a great shot. I'd prefer to see a more focused shot on the flowers since they are so detailed and colorful. Well done.

Prefer this shot - the motion would have been an utter calamity except for the single flower as a central element and sets this off really well.

Beautiful composition and color - nice off center and dynamic comp, explosive color, and motion just happened to play right into your hands.

A lot of technical knowledge to get this right - effort paid off.
