Thanks again Ambenis, It's nice to see that some people will go back deeper in the portfolios to uncover older images. I appreciate it. Andre

Thanks Manu, I never really saw it that way... but now that you mention it, I remember those scenes and I know exactly what you are talking about. The woods looked so dark and stark during that opening battle scene between the Romans and Gauls (or some other barbarians) Thanks for the comparison. It's nice when one of our images can stir up some old memory or analogy in people's minds. Andre

Looks like something from the opening scene of Gladiator...excellent atmosphere and really looks like it has been crammed/squashed into the black frame...well done Manu

Hi Rina, I liked the path in the other one, but the roots in this one are the star of the show, as you say. I did try a gaussian blurred merge on a couple of these, but I wasn't very happy with the results. I think that process has a better chance of success when there isn't so much fine detail in the image. (It can end up looking way to busy) I think it works well on images like toned b&W macro florals. Or like those skull images. It does work on a lot of landscapes where you might want to go completely over the top, like an impressionist painting. Andre

Gotta say I much prefer this comp to the previous. It's definitely the roots that sets this one apart. Great imagery and nicely converted. Have you tried the gaussian technique on either of these?

Thanks Jacques, I found the one you were talking about... great roots! I bet the one wrapped around the rock is a Cedar. We have some similar at our cottage. Andre

Thanks Ray, I got the pun right away :) I think it's split down the middle in Toronto how route is pronounced. Most pronounce it the "long o" root.
BTW, I was born in the UK (London) myself. Moved to Canada in Oct/54. When 5 years old. I think there are many reasons why we end up with fluctuations in the views and comments on our images. I think timing has a lot to do with it...especially for new or different viewers. I've noticed that If we happen to luck into attracting the attention of some new or different viewers within the first half hour of the post, the popularity of the post will sort of snowball from there. I usually don't get an overwhelming amount of views and comments, so I have the luxury of being able to respond to people. I know there is a train of thought out there with some people on this site, that responding with thanks to a comment amounts to shameless self promotion. I don't see it that way. It is only polite as far as I'm concerned. Having said that, I do understand that a lot of people that get many more comments than I do, just don't have the time to thank everyone, and chose to reply back in the form of a comment on one of the other person's image. I like that method too because it promotes the use of the site. Anyway, this has nothing to do with the image :)

This one really reveals the soil erosion Andre. Great again in these wonderful mono tones and I love the way you have caught the diagonal route (I WILL NOT apologise for the pun!!!) of the roots. (Maybe your pronunciation of route is rout, the way Americans say it....whereas we here pronounce route and root the same.....English...how confusing!) Back to the plot.....I too am surprised that this one has not attracted more attention, for I much prefer it to the first. Well done to you my friend, sorry I am all behind.....work!!! Very best wishes.....Ray

Thanks Thilo, Actually I'm surprised this one didn't get a little more attention. The other one has the nice path, but this one has those great roots. I guess they were just too much alike? Andre

Hi Andre,
I like this perspective more as it shows more detail of the roots. Your BW conversion is pretty well done my friend. Overall a nice one.

Thanks Dave, I'm not sure which perspective I like better now. I think the path adds to the last shot, but the roots really dominate this one. Andre

Excellent composition and tones, Andre! I like the diagonal path of the roots through the image! Dave.
