I don't know for sure why some images do/don't get comments, but from my perspective:

If the thumbnail obviously shows a subject I'm not interested in I don't look any further. If it is not clear from the thumnail what the subject is, I will go to the larger image and probably comment. If the image has an interesting title I will often go to the larger image and maybe comment. If the thumbnail looks interesting I'll investigate further. I don't usually bother to comment on an image that already has a lot of comments unless I have a divergent opinion to the other comments.

I think this is a very good abstraction. I like th simple shapes and lines and the vivid color. Puzzled that it hasn't received more attention.
